Drums: The First Steps
All students of the Scott Robertson Drum School work out of this curriculum book. This book is used by many other teachers, including the drum teachers at the Tom Lee Music Learning Centre. It is divided into three sections: 1. Basic reading and counting. – Students learn note values, time signatures and standard counting. 2. Basic snare drum skills. – Students practice reading and playing open rolls, closed rolls, flams and drags. These rudiments are presented in their simplest form for the beginner. Practical applications of each are shown. 3. Drum set repertoire – Students learn the most common beats that drummers are expected to know: ·Rock Beats with fills ·Shuffle ·Funk ·Swing ·Latin The book is in a binder so teachers can easily add their own supplemental pages. The notation is presented realistically, as opposed to special notations used in many drum books. Having students read non-standard notations in numbered columns does not produce good readers. |
Sticking to Basics This book shows students a simple and practical approach to sticking patterns. It is primarily for snare drum, with some applications to drum set shown. It is not intended as a book on rudiments. It’s designed to help the average recreational drummer develop flow in playing drums. |
